Q: なぜ、公案 (Koan)という言葉の問題を使うのですか？

A: なぜならば、禅師が実際に体験した「悟りの瞬間」を追体験することが、修行者にとって一番の近道になると考えられているからです。これに対して、公案を使わず、ただ静かに座ることで「自分の心に備わっている仏の光」を現そうとする修行を「黙照禅（もくしょうぜん）」と呼びます。

A: Because people believe that it is the fastest way to get enlightenment. Students try to have the same experience as the old Zen masters. On the other hand, there is another way called "Mokusho-Zen." In Mokusho-Zen, people do not use the words of 公案 (Koans). They just sit quietly to show the "light of Buddha" in their own minds.
