臨済は黄檗のもとで「仏法の真髄とは何か」と3回質問しましたが、そのたびに言葉ではなく棒で痛烈に叩かれました。絶望した臨済に、黄檗は彼を大愚（たいぐ）のもとへ向かわせました。大愚にその経緯を話したところ、「黄檗はお前のためにそれほど老婆心（深い慈悲）で尽くしてくれたのに、まだ分からんのか」と諭され、臨済はその瞬間に「叩かれたことそのものが言葉を超えた教えだった」と大悟したのです。

At that very moment, Linji attained great enlightenment, realizing that being struck was itself the teaching beyond words.
