Definition
Reading: shōyōroku
Shoyoroku is a collection of one hundred koans originally compiled by Wanshi Shogaku (Hongzhi Zhengjue), to which Wansong Xingxiu added prefaces (Shishu), capping phrases (Chago), and commentaries (Hyosho), following the structure of the Blue Cliff Record (Hekiganroku).
Q&A
- Q: Why is the Shoyoroku called "The Book of Equanimity" worldwide?
- A: Because the true meaning of the title's word "Shoyo" (an appearance of being relaxed and composed) is interpreted as a perfect expression of "Equanimity"—the state of mental calmness and composure in Buddhism.
