向上底とは、「向上」の境地そのもの、あるいはその絶対的な境地から直接現れ出る言葉や具体的な働きのこと。 （「底（てい）」は禅特有の言葉で、「〜なもの」「〜のありよう」を示す接尾辞）。人間の日常的な思考、解釈、知的な理解を一切寄せ付けない、妥協のない純粋な真理のありようを指す。
向上とは、すべての区別や言語による分別を超越した、絶対的な平等の世界（悟りの境地）そのもののこと。あるいは、悟った後、仏や祖師という既存の聖なる権威すらも超え、あらゆる執着や概念を打破しようとする、禅における究極の超越的な立場や働きを指す。対義語に、「向下」がある。向下とは、絶対的な平等の境地（向上）にとどまることなく、再び現実の相対差別（個々の違いや善悪がある日常世界）へと下り立ち、自らの悟りの智慧を具体的な生活の営みのために自在に発揮すること。また、そのような現実的・実践的なあり方や働きそのものを指す。

Kojo-tei (向上底) is the state of Kojo itself. It also means words or concrete actions that come directly from that absolute state. The word "tei (底)" is a suffix unique to Zen. It means "a thing" or "the way of being." Kojo-tei points to the state of strict, pure truth. It does not accept ordinary human thoughts, explanations, or intellectual understanding at all.
Kojo (向上) is the world of absolute equality (the state of enlightenment) itself. It goes beyond all differences and distinction by language. It also means the ultimate standpoint or action in Zen. In this state, after reaching enlightenment, a person goes beyond even existing sacred authorities like Buddhas and patriarchs. The person tries to break all attachments and concepts.
Its antonym is Koge (向下). Koge means not staying in the state of absolute equality (Kojo). It means returning to the actual world of relative distinction, where individual differences, good and evil exist. In this world, a person freely uses the wisdom of enlightenment for daily life. It also means this practical way of being and acting itself.
