仏性とは、仏になる可能性という意味である。大乗仏教では、誰でも仏陀になれると解き、本来の心の清浄性を強調した。これをもっと具体的にいうと（如来の子）如来蔵が内在するという。仏性という語は、大乗仏教の涅槃経で最初に使われた。如来蔵と仏性は、初期仏教にもアビダルマ仏教にもなかった大乗仏教特有の用語だ。涅槃経では「一切衆生にことごとくに仏性が有る」と説き、一切衆生悉有仏性（いっさいしゅじょう しつうぶっしょう）という。なお、悉有仏性は、しっつぶっしょうとも読む。

仏性 (Buddha-nature) is the possibility of becoming a Buddha. 大乗仏教 (Mahayana Buddhism) teaches that anyone can become a Buddha, and it emphasizes the pure nature of the original mind. To explain this more specifically, people say that 如来蔵 (the Tathagatagarbha), which means the child of the Tathagata, exists inside us. The word "Buddha-nature" was first used in 涅槃経 (the Nirvana Sutra) of Mahayana Buddhism. Tathagatagarbha and Buddha-nature are special terms of Mahayana Buddhism that did not exist in Early Buddhism or Abhidharma Buddhism. The Nirvana Sutra teaches that "all living beings have Buddha-nature." This teaching is called 一切衆生悉有仏性 (Issai Shujo Shitsu-u Bussho) in Japanese. You can also read this term as "Shittsu Bussho."
