Reading: Kojomon
向上門 (Kojo-mon) is the world of absolute equality (the state of enlightenment) beyond all differences. It is a way to reach enlightenment through personal practice. Its antonym is 向下門 (Koge-mon). Koge-mon is the world of relative distinction (the actual world), where individual differences, good and evil, and other contrasts exist. It is a way to show the state of enlightenment in daily life. Kojo-mon and Koge-mon are originally one. The state of Zen shows that the act of seeking enlightenment and the act of returning to daily life are two sides of the same coin. This idea is called 向上即向下の一路 (Kojo-soku-geko-no-ichiro).
Q&A
- Q: Why is the "Kojo-mon" not enough for seeking enlightenment?
- A: Because focusing only on the Kojo-mon has a danger. You may trap yourself in an abstract world far from your daily life. Enlightenment does not exist only in abstract theories or meditation. Its true value is tested in your "place of living," such as actual human relationships and daily work.
