大悲心陀羅尼（真読）

大悲心陀羅尼（真読）とは？

横浜の總持寺に伝わる大悲真読（だいひしんどく）を紹介。

大悲真読とは、石川県の總持寺の峨山（がさん）禅師が石川県の永光寺を兼務していたころ、毎朝永光寺の朝課を勤めてから、能登半島を貫いて能登の總持寺の朝課に駆けつけるのを待つために、『大悲心陀羅尼』を非常にゆっくり丁寧に読む読経法のことだ。

ちなみに、總持寺の總持とは、陀羅尼（だらに）。という意味。

英文概要overview

The full name of the Daihishin Dharani is “The Sutra of the Great Compassion Dharani of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara.”

The Daihishin Dharani means “the Great Compassionate Heart of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.”

It is written in Chinese characters, but the sounds come from Sanskrit, an old Indian language. Because of that, it cannot be directly translated into normal words.

Why?

Because each sound is believed to carry spiritual power and prayer that go beyond meaning. The sound itself is considered sacred and full of good energy (merit).

Still, for those who want to understand, a simple translation of the main ideas is shown below.

About “Daihishindoku” In this video, we introduce a special chanting style called “Daihishindoku,” which comes from Sōjiji Temple in Yokohama. Long ago, a Zen master named Gasan Zenji served as the head of two temples: Eikōji and Sōjiji, both in Ishikawa Prefecture.

He first did the morning chanting at Eikōji, then traveled across the Noto Peninsula to join the morning chanting at Sōjiji.

While waiting for him, the monks at Sōjiji chanted the Daihishin Dharani very slowly and carefully. That is how Daihishindoku began.

About Dharani and Mantra Dharani (陀羅尼, darani) is a long sacred chant that protects Buddhist teachings and spiritual power.

Mantra (真言, shingon) is a short sacred word or phrase that calls upon the Buddha’s power. Interestingly, the name “Sōji” itself means “Dharani.”

⚠️ Note: This video respectfully follows the traditional Daihishindoku melody passed down at Sōtō Zen’s main temple, Sōjiji. It is not an official teaching or ceremony of the temple, but a personal practice of chanting and devotion made in honor of that tradition.

大いなる慈悲の主、観世音菩薩に帰依いたします。
すべての仏と菩薩に礼拝し、偉大なる慈悲と智慧を讃えます。
オン。すべての罪障と苦を除き、清浄の力をもたらしてください。
すべての幸いを与える聖なる菩薩たちに帰依します。
すべての守護者と大力の聖者に礼拝いたします。
─一切の衆生を守護し、苦を除き、福徳を授けてください。
オン。観自在菩薩よ、あなたの大悲の力によって悟りに導いてください。
あらゆる衆生の苦を取り除き、速やかに救済の力を及ぼしてください。

I bow to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and praise their great wisdom and kindness.

Om. Please remove all sins and sufferings, and bring us purity.

I take refuge in the holy Bodhisattvas who bring happiness to all. I bow to all protectors and strong saints.

Please guard all living beings, remove pain, and give blessings.

Om. Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, guide us to enlightenment with your great compassion.

Remove all suffering quickly and save all beings. With your great power, drive away evil, protect goodness, and make everything pure.

Remove obstacles from our body and mind, and help us see clearly with wisdom.

Calm disasters, increase virtue, heal illness, and bring peace and joy.

May we walk the path to enlightenment, and may the guardian deities protect us always.

解説Detailed Explanation

大悲心陀羅尼の正式名称は『千手千眼観世音菩薩広大円満無礙大悲心陀羅尼経』。
大悲心陀羅尼とは、観世音菩薩の「大いなる慈悲の心」を表す陀羅尼（だらに）で、もともとサンスクリット語（古代インド語）を漢字で音写したものだから、訳すことはできない。
理由は、これらの音には「意味を超えた祈り・波動」が込められており、
「意味を持たない音そのものが功徳である」とされているからだ。

それでも、意味を知りたいという人はいると思うので、可能な限り原文の語義に忠実な意訳を載せておいた。

ちなみに陀羅尼（だらに）と真言（しんごん）の違いは、陀羅尼は教えや功徳を保持・護るための長めの呪文で、真言は仏の力を呼び出す短い呪文だ。
