向下門とは、個々の違いや善悪などの違いが明確に現れる相対的な差別の世界（現実の現象世界）を指し、悟った境地を日常生活の中で発揮する道のことである。対義語で向上門がある。向上門とは、すべての区別を超越した絶対的な平等の世界（悟りの境地）で、個人の修行によって悟りに至る道のことである。向上門と向下門は本来一つであり、悟りを求める働きと日常に戻る働きが表裏一体であるという禅の境地を、向上即向下の一路という。

向下門 (Koge-mon) is the world of relative distinction (the actual world), where individual differences, good and evil, and other contrasts clearly appear. It is a way to use the state of enlightenment in daily life. Its antonym is 向上門 (Kojo-mon). Kojo-mon is the world of absolute equality (the state of enlightenment) beyond all differences, and it is a way to reach enlightenment through personal practice. Kojo-mon and Koge-mon are originally one thing. The state of Zen teaches that the act of seeking enlightenment and the act of returning to daily life are two sides of the same coin. This idea is called 向上即向下の一路 (Kojo-soku-Koge-no-ichiro).
